Our field of responsibility is based on the shipping industry and its framework conditions, the ship and its crew. In other words, the Danish Maritime Authority is responsible for the following:

• The construction, equipment and operation of Danish ships (including safety, prevention of terrorism, safety of navigation, manning, occupational health and environmental protection) as well as port state control of foreign ships calling at Danish ports;
• Ship registration;
• The training, education, employment, health and social conditions of seafarers;
• Shipping policy, maritime law as well as national and international industrial policy.

The jurisdiction covers both the merchant fleet and the fishing industry. However, the Danish Maritime Authority is not responsible for fishing operations, which are under the jurisdiction of the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.

The Danish Maritime Authority has the overall responsibility for the maritime training and educational system, consisting of taxameter-funded independent institutions.

Furthermore, the Danish Maritime Authority handles tasks related to regulation of navigation in Danish waters, while buoyage, vessel traffic and coastal surveillance, enforcement of sovereignty, the police authority, all aspects of pilotage, pollution prevention, environmental surveillance, ice-breaking, etc. are covered by the Danish Ministry of Defence.

The Danish Maritime Authority consists of the central authority as such, eight survey offices, including the office in Nuuk, Greenland, as well as the Centre for Maritime Health Service on the island of Fanø. The responsibility for operating the training ship DANMARK has been transferred to the maritime training centre MARTEC in Frederikshavn, but the ship is still owned by the State represented by the Danish Maritime Authority.

The Danish Maritime Authority is an agency under the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs.
