About The Centre for Maritime Health Services
The Centre for Maritime Health Service trains and educates Danish and foreign seafarers in both the merchant and the fishing fleet as medical caretakers. We also offer other courses with maritime contents, such as first-aid courses. Furthermore, we are the centre of knowledge and competence for the maritime health service, meaning that we provide guidance and answer questions from the entire Danish merchant and fishing fleet.
Vision The vision of the Maritime Health Service is to create the world’s best health service, which is, to the widest extent possible, as good as the shore-based health service.
This vision is in accordance with the World Health Organization’s declarations on health for everybody as well as an equal right to health.
It is not possible to equip and organize a maritime health service in the same way as the shore-based health service. For several reasons, it is not possible to equip a ship with, for example, medical doctors and comprehensive advanced diagnostic equipment. Consequently, the responsible medical caretaker on board is trained to be the medical doctor’s eyes, ears and hands, and new equipment is constantly developed increasing the possibilities of making long-distance diagnoses.
