Research and innovation

The Danish Maritime Authority is involved in research, development, demonstration and innovation within shipping.

The Blue Denmark is to be in a strong position when facing the challenges of the future. Therefore, research, development, demonstration and innovation efforts must be made within fields such as technology, competences, markets, economics, logistics and security, etc.

One of the most important challenges of the shipping industry consists in reducing the effects of the climate on the environment, as included in the vision:
”Reduction of emissions from ship transport through the development of environmentally efficient and energy-efficient maritime technologies and systems.”

In this connection, four core areas have been identified:

  • Energy-efficient systems for ships, including the development of existing technologies, the use of natural gases and fuel cells.
  • Efficient and optimized ship propulsion, including hull shapes, propellers and hull paint.
  • Efficient operation and maintenance.
  • Optimized transport chains.
