Courses to be refreshed

On this page, you can read more about what to do after 1 January 2017 in connection with the expiry of your certificate of proficiency and its renewal.

When your certificate of competency expires and you want to apply for renewal, you will be required to document completion of the refresher course "basic maritime safety and fire-fighting" during the last five years.

When a certificate of proficiency is about to expire (five years from the date of issue), you yourself must ensure that the qualifications are refreshed through a course provider. If you have one of the following certificates of proficiency, which you use in connection with your work on board, you must ensure that they are never less than five years old:

  • Fire management on board ships
  • Operation of lifeboats, liferafts and rescue boats
  • Operation of fast rescue boats (FRB)

All seafarers must complete a refresher course in "basic maritime safety and fire-fighting". Only if you perform the other functions, will you be required to refresh these qualifications.

How do I refresh my qualifications?

Here you can find course providers and read more about the courses offered:

Basic fire safety and fire-fighting

You can still refresh some of the qualifications on board ships by means of the traditional drills made. They are, inter alia, donning a life-jacket, operating life-saving appliances or using smoke diver's equipment.

You will be required to refresh the rest of the qualifications by means of a course provider ashore.

Fire management on board ships

It will still be possible to refresh some qualifications on board ships by means of the traditional drills carried out. They are, for example, communication and coordination during fire-fighting operation, ventilation control or use of ship procedures.

The remaining qualifications will need to be refreshed through a course provider ashore.

Operation of lifeboats, liferafts and rescue boats

It will still be possible to refresh some qualifications on board ships by means of the traditional drills carried out. They are, for example, clearing and launching a lifeboat, operating the lifeboat or using equipment in the lifeboat.

You will be required to refresh the remaining qualifications through a course provider ashore.

Operation of fast rescue boats

It will still be possible to refresh some qualifications on board ships by means of the traditional drills carried out. They are, for example, clearing and launching a rescue boat, using communication equipment or performing search patterns in case somebody has fallen over board.

You will be required to refresh the rest of the qualifications by means of a course provider ashore.
