Ship's assistants and ratings

On this page, you can read more about what to do if you are an ordinary seaman. Ordinary seamen comprise ordinary ship's assistants, able ship's assistants, able seamen and motormen.

For able ratings

From 1 January 2017, all able ratings will be required to have a certificate of proficiency documenting that they are able in accordance with the STCW Convention.

If you only have an endorsement in your discharge book stating that you are a ship's assistant, you will have to apply for a certificate of proficiency as an able ship's assistant before 1 January 2017.

You can apply for a certificate of proficiency here.

You should also note that there are requirements for a refresher course in "basic maritime safety and fire-fighting". You must ask the master to issue documentation (in danish) (stamped with the date) to this effect during 2016. After 2017, you are required to complete a refresher course within five years from the date of the documentation issued by the master.

For ordinary ratings
Ordinary ratings on board Danish ships are not required to hold a certificate of proficiency.

You should, however, note that there is a requirement for a refresher course in "basic maritime safety and fire-fighting". You should ask the master to issue documentation (in danish) (stamped with the date) for this function during 2016. After 2017, you must complete a refresher course within five years from the date stamped on the documentation issued by the master.

For both ordinary and able ratings
From 1 January 2017, everyone performing the functions below will also be required to document that the qualifications have been maintained. When a certificate of proficiency is about to expire (five years from the date of issue), you yourself must ensure that you refresh the qualifications through a course provider.

If you hold one of the following certificates of proficiency, which you use in connection with your work on board, you must ensure that they are always less than five years old:

  • Fire management on board ships
  • Operation of lifeboats, liferafts and rescue boats
  • Operation of fast rescue boats (FRB)

All seafarers are required to refresh "basic maritime safety and fire-fighting". Only if you perform other functions, are you required to refresh these qualifications.
