Bill adopted – amendment of the Merchant Shipping Act, Safety at Sea Act and the Seamen’s Act

25. March 2011
On 22 March 2011, a unanimous Danish Parliament adopted Danish Minister for Economic and Business Affairs Brian Mikkelsen’s proposal to amend the Merchant Shipping Act, Safety at Sea Act and the Seamen’s Act.

The bill establishes the statutory basis for implementing an EU Directive on insurance for maritime claims. The purpose is to protect the claimant better by requiring that large ships take out liability insurance.

Furthermore, the amendment forms the basis for Danish ratification of the United Nations’ International Labour Organization’s Convention concerning work in the fishing sector. The purpose of the Work in Fishing Convention is to establish international minimum standards for working conditions in the fishing sector, such as requirements for a minimum age of fishermen, regulations on hours of rest and occupational health, including accident prevention.

Additional information
The bill is available in Danish from the webpage of the Danish Parliament  (the bill has no. L 109).
