It is mandatory for fishing vessels to be surveyed when rebuilt. This survey is made to ensure that the vessel meets the safety and health requirements of the Danish Maritime Authority and is important to prevent accidents. Consequently, the DMA must be contacted when rebuildings are planned.
It may be difficult for owners of small fishing vessels to have a complete overview of the rules on fishing vessels. The Danish Maritime Authority requests that yards and other service companies provide the owners with guidance about current regulations on surveys in connection with repairs or rebuildings of vessels. However, the obligation to report a rebuilding to the Danish Maritime Authority still rests with the owner of the vessel, but this reporting obligation may be met through the yard.
A vessel must be subject to a survey if, among other things,
• The main dimensions of the vessel are changed, including extension of the vessel, greater width or elevated deck;
• The engine is replaced;
• The type of vessel is changed, for example from net to trawl, where gallows, winches and drums, etc. are fitted;
• A rebuilding of the vessel or installation of new gear changes the stability of the vessel.
In case of doubt, the Danish Maritime Authority should always be contacted.
Attention is also drawn to the fact that small fishing vessels which have not been subject to mandatory surveys previously may become subject to mandatory surveys in connection with rebuildings. This is especially relevant to vessels constructed before 1 September 1984 with a gross register tonnage below 5, but a scantling number of or above 20.
