Major cooperation project with Denmark in the lead shows the way: Future navigation will become safer
An intelligent GPS system for ships and several other advances to enhance safety of navigation are among the results that will now be presented to the entire world. The Danish Maritime Authority is at the head of the project.
It is with pride that Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Andreas Nordseth will be opening a conference on Wednesday showing what a wide number of partners have achieved from the so-called EfficienSea project. As one of the most significant project results, Andreas Nordseth stresses e-Navigation – a new system for the benefit of navigational safety worldwide. Navigation officers and the like can look forward to a simpler and more modern way of getting the ship safely in port. For example, a kind of intelligent GPS system for ships will be introduced, presenting only the necessary information to the navigation officer, just as a number of tasks will be automated. This will enable the navigation officer to focus entirely on navigating the ship.
“Many shipping nations have paid much attention to E-Navigation. And rightly so. The work creating a system for safer navigation will have a positive impact on safety at sea in the future and will, within a number of years, be something that is widely spread to quite a lot of ships. I also believe that we can use the results for the benefit of Danish maritime businesses, which can further develop the system and thus create an entirely new strength position as international suppliers of marine equipment.”
During the work, many good results have been made with e-Navigation, and these are important input for the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) which is currently examining how to make e-Navigation mandatory on ships in the future.

Three-day conference on DFDS ferry
The entire concept of e-Navigation and other results from EfficienSea will be presented at a conference starting on Wednesday 18 January 2012. The conference will last for three days and take place on the DFDS Oslo ferry CROWN SEAWAYS, which will make a return voyage to the Norwegian capital. The DFDS ferry CROWN SEAWAYS uses a prototype of e-Navigation with great satisfaction.
The conference is a preliminary presentation of the many results created by EfficienSea. However, many of the activities under EfficienSea will continue afterwards – including e-Navigation.

The Danish Maritime Authority has the leading role in the EfficienSea project, which includes maritime authorities from the entire Baltic Sea region as well as companies and universities. EfficienSea is one of the EU flagship projects, partly financed by the Baltic Sea program, with a budget of 8 million euro.
