 Maritime training programmes scrutinized

29. June 2010
In the recent year, the maritime professional bachelor programmes have been subject to close scrutiny – and the final evaluation is primarily positive.

On 17 June 2010, the Accreditation Council made a decision on the accreditation of the maritime professional bachelor programmes. The programmes offered that have been positively accredited are the marine engineering programmes at the Copenhagen Marine Engineer and Electrical Installation Engineer College, the Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering, the Fredericia Marine and Engineer College and Martec in Frederikshavn.

The programmes offered that have received a conditional positive accreditation are the training programmes for marine engineer, junior officer and ship’s officer at SIMAC in Svendborg.

"In general, it is impressive that the maritime training programmes have received a positive or conditional positive accreditation", says Head of Centre Sune Rahn. And Sune adds, "The accreditation result will form a natural part of the quality work performed at the training institutions".

A positive accreditation means that the quality and relevance of the programmes offered can be compared to other professional bachelor programmes under, for example, the Ministry of Education. The programmes offered have been evaluated on the basis of 17 criteria on, for example, the relation to the industry and the profession, the learning benefit at the training programme, the teacher competences, the quality of the practical training as well as the contents and arrangement of the training programme.

A conditional positive accreditation means that the training institution has one year to meet the criteria not met. The Danish Maritime Authority will follow up on this work in connection with inspections. Subsequently, a new accreditation evaluation will be carried out.

More information on the accreditation of the professional bachelor programmes is available in Danish from the webpage of the Danish Evaluation Institute
