Means of escape and passenger ships’ safe return to port on the agenda at the 54th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Fire Protection (FP 54)

23. April 2010
The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) has just held a meeting in London.

At the recent session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Fire Protection, new requirements for means of escape from machinery spaces as well as equipment for recharging air bottles for air breathing apparatuses on cargo vessels were among the issues on the agenda.

Interim guidelines for the regulations on passenger ships’ safe return to port were also drawn up. The background for this is the new requirement for equipment and systems for passenger ships’ safe return to port in case a fire occurs on board.

The regulations will enter into force on 1 July 2010 and apply to new passenger ships.
