New strategy sets goals for the maritime industry of the future

02. July 2010
Minister for Economic and Business Affairs Brian Mikkelsen launches strategy for the entire maritime Denmark. The strategy creates a common Danish platform for growth, sustainability and safety at sea.

The purpose of the strategy is to increase coordination and cooperation across the maritime authorities and industries. This means sharing the competences and knowledge in the best possible way and creating a common overview of all the efforts made in the maritime field.

Minister for Economic and Business Affairs Brian Mikkelsen says:

“The maritime industries make considerable contributions to the Danish economy and the employment. In the government, we focus on the Blue Denmark’s importance and potential for creating growth and jobs. At the same time, it is decisive that we ensure climate-sustainable as well as environmentally-sustainable solutions, just as we must improve safety at sea.”

The strategy unites the Danish efforts made in the maritime field under five aims:

1.     Good development potential for the maritime industries.
2.     Reduced greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
3.     Protection of the marine environment and the coastal zone.
4.     Increased safety at sea.
5.     Coordination of the efforts made in the maritime field.

With the strategy, the government follows-up on the EU Integrated Maritime Policy that, among other things, has drawn attention to the use of strengthened coordination in the Member States of the maritime measures made.
