Piracy warnings and e-navigation on the agenda of United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO)

17. March 2010
A new guideline on the transmission of piracy warnings has been drawn up by the IMO Sub-Committee on Radiocommunications and Search and Rescue (COMSAR).

The guideline was finalised at the most recent session of the Sub-Committee held in London in March.

The new guideline provides information about the transmission of piracy warnings. At the session, e-navigation was also debated – a strategically important and new approach to the organisation of operational procedures for future use in ship navigation.

In addition, problems with non-authorised distress transmitters and man-over-board equipment were dealt with.

A summary from the session is available here.

If you would like to know more about the session or the Danish Maritime Authority’s work within the field of radiocommunications, please contact Special Advisor Hans Aage Nielsen, telephone +45 39 17 46 33, e-mail han@dma.dk.
