EU Baltic Sea Strategy – To become a model region for clean shipping

In June 2009, the European Commission presented a Communication on a Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region as well as an Action Plan at the request of the European Council, which were adopted by the European Council in October 2009. The strategy has identified four pillars, each of which relates to a wide range of policies:

  1. An environmentally sustainable region;
  2. a prosperous region;
  3. an accessible and attractive region; and
  4. a safe and secure region.

The pillar on an environmentally sustainable region covers the following priority areas:

  1. To reduce nutrient inputs to the sea to acceptable levels;
  2. to preserve natural zones and biodiversity including fisheries;
  3. to reduce the use and impact of hazardous substances;
  4. to become a model region for clean shipping; and
  5. to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Denmark acts as a co-ordinator of priority area 4 – To become a model region for clean shipping. More information on this priority area and the related flagship projects is available here
