International relations

As the shipping industry operates on a global basis, Denmark seeks international cooperation and regulation to a great extent in order to promote quality shipping and minimize the demand for regional and national solutions.

Denmark continuously seeks to influence international shipping forums, where key decisions on future shipping policy are made. Moreover, Denmark plays an active role in the European Community and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as well as in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and has ratified all important IMO and ILO instruments.

Trade relations
Open and unrestricted market access is essential to the Danish fleet, which operates on a global basis. Therefore, Denmark continuously works for an active trade policy with the focus on the most important foreign markets.

Bilateral contacts are of great value. However, as a large shipping nation, Denmark is also an active player in the work carried out by the EU as well as other international institutions such as the WTO in promoting a liberal shipping policy. Furthermore, the Danish cabotage market is open to all ships regardless of flag.

The right to market access is, among other things, based on a number of bilateral shipping agreements between Denmark and other countries and on more general trade political agreements between the EU and its Member States as well as third countries.

As early as 1974, Denmark concluded a bilateral maritime agreement with China, which was updated to modern shipping standards in 2000. Furthermore, in 2002 China and EU and its Member States concluded a maritime agreement.
