How to register in DIS: Quality Shipping in Denmark

The Danish International Ship Register
Denmark has long-standing maritime traditions and is located at the entrance to the Baltic Sea.

Information about EU/EEA shipping companies’ possibilities of having ships registered in the Danish International Ship Register

Danish shipping is currently among the worlds most competitive. Danish shipping operates 7 to 8 % of the world tonnage, but accounts for close to 10 % of the total turnover from global maritime goods transport. One of the main elements in ensuring a competitive Danish merchant fleet is the Danish International Ship Register (DIS).

DIS offers shipowners favourable economic conditions, including low tonnage tax and tax exemption for seafarers, which enables them to compete on a global scale. Overall, Denmark - with its well-functioning infrastructure, flexible labour market and qualified work force - is an attractive location for international businesses.

The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) – a government agency under the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs - is a modern administration that offers quick service of high quality. The administration gives priority to servicing shipping companies and seafarers.

High priority is also given to influencing global rule-making and to ensure market access for Danish operators.

The mission of the DMA is to promote health and safety on clean seas and to effectively strengthen the competitiveness and employment of maritime industries.

The main purposes of the Danish shipping policy are:
1. To promote open and unrestricted market access.
2. To ensure the global competitiveness of the Danish fleet.
3. To promote safety and security for ships and those on board and prevent marine pollution.

Furthermore, it is the objective of the Danish Government to retain and improve Denmark’s position as one of the world’s most competitive seafaring nations. In that regard, the Danish Government has launched an action plan “The Danish Maritime Cluster – an Agenda for Growth.
