My certificate expires in 2016


If you have a certificate of competency with a date of expiry no later than on 31 December 2016, you do NOT have a so-called STCW 2010 certificate. Read more about what to do if you want to apply for a new certificate of competency meeting the new requirements that will become effective on 1 January 2017.

Depending on your education and training as well as your position on board, different conditions must be met before you can apply for a new STCW 2010 certificate. Below you will find descriptions of the various types of positions and the requirements for refreshing your certificates of competency.

For navigating officers

The following meet the requirements for ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System):

On BRM/ERM:
All Danish navigating officers are considered to meet the requirements for BRM (Bridge Resource Management).

All Danish engineer officers and mechanists are considered to meet the requirements for ERM (Engine Resource Management).

  • Navigating officers who have completed the master (home trade) exam after January 2013.
  • Navigating officers who have completed another exam for navigating officers after December 2002.

When navigating officers who have not completed ECDIS apply for a new certificate of competency, they will be required to complete further ECDIS training. In special cases, the Danish Maritime Authority can issue certificates of competency with an endorsement that the seafarer is permitted to serve ONLY on board ships that are not fitted with ECDIS.

For engineer officers

No new requirements have been introduced for you when applying for an STCW 2010 certificate.

When applying for a new certificate of competency, the certificate will be endorsed with ETO (electro-technical officer) in accordance with STCW regulation III/6.

For mechanists

If you passed your exam after 1 January 2013, you will be endorsed as an ETO (electro-technical officer) in accordance with STCW regulation III/6 when applying for a new certificate of competency.

If you do not have this endorsement, a supplementary course will be required. You can read more on MARTEC- maritime and polytechnic college.

If applying for a certificate of competency in 2016, you will not be required to complete a refresher course in "basic maritime safety and fire-fighting".

Refreshing

Please note the following:

Fire management on board ships

Seafarers performing this function will not be required to document completion of a refresher course in fire management on board ships.

You should ask the master to issue documentation (stamped with a date) of this function during 2016. After 2017, you must make sure to complete a refresher course. This must be completed within a period of five years from the date on the documentation issued by the master.

Operation of liferafts and lifeboats and rescue boats

Seafarers who perform this function will be required to complete a refresher course during 2016 unless they have completed the course during the last five years. In the future, a refresher course will be required every fifth year.

Operation of fast rescue boats (FRB)

Seafarers who perform this function will be required to complete a refresher course during 2016 unless they have completed the course during the last five years. In the future, a refresher course will be required every fifth year.
