Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation can be used for unconscious children who do not breathe normally; however, start with 5 insufflations followed by 30:2. The chest should be pressed down by one-third (4 cm for infants and 5 cm for children).
A foreign body that is blocking the respiratory tract is a life-threatening situation that requires immediate action in the form of back slabbing. If this is unsuccessful, use the Heimlich manoeuvre. If the person becomes unconscious, give cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.
