Commercial ships and pleasure crafts with gross tonnage of or above 20 must be registered in the Register of Shipping. That also applies to houseboats used as private residence with gross tonnage of or above 20.
Hereby, the Register of Shipping differs from the Danish International Register of Shipping, to which only merchant ships can be admitted.
Here, you can read more about what to do when you want to register a pleasure craft or to delete it from the register.
Since 1 March 2018, pleasure crafts with a gross tonnage below 20 can no longer be registered in the Register of Shipping. In the future mortgages and other rights must therefore be registered in the register of chattel mortgages and declarations of legal incapacity according to general rules of chattel mortgages.
We will not be able to issue a certificate of nationality in the future for pleasure crafts with a gross tonnage below 20. Since owners of pleasure crafts may need to provide documentation for this to authorities outside Denmark, the Register of Shipping has prepared a “To whom it may concern” letter which can be presented instead.
Furthermore, private yachtsman organizations can issue certificates of nationality for their members.
