Greenland ships

Skib på havet med isbjerg i forgrunden

All vessels used for commercial purposes must be registered in a Danish ship register.

  • Vessels over 20 gross tonnage (GT) must normally always be registered in the Register of Shipping (DAS)
  • Vessels of 0-5 gross tonnage (GT) must normally always be registered in the Boat Register
  • In respect of vessels of 5-20 gross tonnage (GT), the owner may choose either of the two registers
  • Special limits and requirements apply to the registration of barges and other vessels
  • If you wish to register a mortgage on the ship and the ship has a gross tonnage (GT) of 5 or more, the ship must be registered in the Register of Shipping as interests cannot be registered in the Boat Register. Mortgages on commercial vessels of less than 5 gross tonnage (GT) must be registered in the register of chattel mortgages with the Land Registry.

Special rules for fishing vessels – port registration numbers

The municipal authorities of Illulissat, Aasiaat, Sisimiut and Qaqortoq assign port registration numbers to fishing vessels having their port of registry in these municipalities. The municipal authorities are responsible for immediately notifying the Register of Shipping (srg@dma.dk) every time a port registration number is assigned or removed, so that the information can be entered on the Register and on the ship’s Certificate of Nationality.

The Register of Shipping assigns and keeps records of port registration numbers of ships whose port of registry is in the municipality of Nuuk.

It is possible to select a specific port registration number if it is available in the municipality in question. You can reserve the port registration number in the Register of Shipping for up to two years for a natural or legal person or an identifiable ship by sending a request, for example by e-mail. In the e-mail, state the port registration number you wish to reserve and to whom/which ship. A reserved port registration number cannot be assigned to others during the reservation period.

An electronic form has been received by the Register of Shipping when the sender receives a confirmation e-mail stating a file number; file numbers begin by the current year followed by six digits – a total of 10 digits – for example 2018000132.

Documents which must be sent as original documents must carry the original signature(s) of the person(s) authorised to sign on behalf of the owner. All signatures must be repeated in block capitals or typescript so that the signatories’ names are legible. Spouses and cohabitants cannot sign as attesting witnesses for each other. Also state the full address (in block capitals or typescript).

If you have any questions about how to complete the forms, please contact the Register of Shipping at tel. + 45 72 19 60 00 or by e-mail to srg@dma.dk

Procedure for registration or transfer of ownership of a ship

When the Register of Shipping receives documents concerning the creation of interests – bills of sale, mortgage documents, S or R forms – a daily log number is assigned to the document. The sooner the document is assigned a log number, the sooner the protection of interests obtained through the registration will take effect. In respect of ships whose port of registry is in Greenland, all non-electronic documents may be sent to the Register of Shipping by e-mail with the subject field ‘Notification to daily log’. The daily log number will then be assigned on the basis of the e-mail and that way you will achieve an earlier daily log date.
