Denmark and Japan are strengthening their maritime cooperation with an updated Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC), signed in Tokyo on 27 october 2026 by Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Brian Adrian Wessel and Director General of Japan's Maritime Bureau Motonari Adachi.
The agreement updates the cooperation established in 2017 and provides a framework for closer collaboration between the two maritime authorities.
During the visit, Brian Adrian Wessel and Deputy Director General Rikke Wetter Olufsen met with representatives of Japan's Maritime Bureau to discuss shared priorities and opportunities for further cooperation:
Denmark and Japan share a strong interest in a well-functioning international maritime framework. By strengthening our cooperation on maritime governance, we can exchange knowledge and work together to address common challenges, including the green transition of shiping and the development of international maritime regulations, says Brian Adrian Wessel.
The updated agreement identifies several areas of cooperation, including the development and enforecement of international environmental regulations, digitalisation, green maritime technologies and shipbuilding. It also provides for knowledge-sharing on autonomous ships and cooperation on the development of international regulations in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Through the agreement, Denmark and Japan aim to strengthen their partnership and contribute to the continued development of international shipping.
