International shipping depends on having common and predictable rules. At a time of growing geopolitical instability and increasing pressure on the international rules-based system, strong global cooperation on shipping is more important than ever,” says Brian Adrian Wessel, Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority.
Denmark will work for a strong IMO that ensures clear international rules, freedom of navigation and a level playing field – and for ensuring that the rules we agree on are also implemented effectively and consistently.
As a major flag state with a strong maritime tradition, Denmark sees the IMO as the natural international forum for developing and implementing common rules for shipping. Predictable and transparent framework conditions are essential for safe and efficient shipping and for global trade.
Denmark will contribute to strong multilateral cooperation, where international standards are developed and implemented effectively and consistently across flag and port states. At the same time, effective and transparent governance of the IMO is important to ensure clear strategic direction, responsible budget management and well-functioning decision-making processes.
Denmark's strategic priorities are:
- Maritime safety and security
- Green transition
- Human factors
- Administrative efficiency
