At its 138th session, the International Maritime Organization Council awarded Gemma Griffin, Vice President and Head of Global Crewing at DFDS, a Letter of Commendation under the IMO Gender Equality Award 2027.

Creating equal opportunities in the maritime sector takes more than good intentions. It takes practical action to open doors, develop talent and give women the opportunity to build careers at sea.

At its 138th session, the IMO Council awarded Gemma Griffin, Vice President and Head of Global Crewing at DFDS, a Letter of Commendation under the IMO Gender Equality Award 2027. The recommendation recognizes her work to create opportunities for women to enter and progress in seafaring roles through education, mentoring, sea-time and employment opportunities:

I am deeply honoured to be considered for this recognition, but it is not an achievement that belongs to me alone. It reflects the dedication of countless colleagues, both at sea and ashore, who have championed the belief that talent should never be limited by gender. Together, we have worked to create opportunities, remove barriers, and support women in building rewarding careers at sea. I share this recognition with every seafarer, manager, mentor, and colleague who has helped turn that ambition into reality, Gemma tells the Danish Maritime Authority.

For Denmark, the nomination reflects the expertise and commitment found across our maritime sector – and the importance of turning ambitions for gender equality into tangible opportunities.
