This year’s theme – “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity” – highlights the essential role the ocean plays in sustaining life, livelihoods, and the global economy. With more than 80% of global trade transported by sea, shipping is not only vital for world commerce but also central to protecting the marine environment and managing ocean resources responsibly.
With this theme, IMO underlines the importance of global cooperation to safeguard the ocean from threats such as pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change, while also recognizing the opportunities for innovation, green transition and sustainable growth.
IMO’s headquarters in London will be illuminated in blue, and events will take place worldwide to spotlight the deep connection between shipping, ocean protection and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
