Day of the Seafarer: Safety, Respect and Wellbeing at Sea

Published 25-06-2025

Today, 25 June, is Day of the Seafarer – an international observance established by the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) to recognise seafarers around the world and highlight their vital role in global shipping and their working conditions at sea.

With the theme “My Harassment-Free Ship”, IMO this year draws attention to the importance of creating safe and respectful working environments on board. The goal is to promote a maritime culture with zero tolerance for bullying and harassment, where all seafarers feel safe, valued and protected.

The campaign calls on seafarers, shipping companies and authorities to take part in a joint effort to strengthen wellbeing and mental health at sea – and to share messages and experiences using the hashtag #MyHarassmentFreeShip.

Day of the Seafarer was introduced in 2010 and has since become an annual opportunity to focus on the rights and conditions of seafarers – and on the vital role they play in keeping global trade moving.
