The Gulf of Guinea

The Danish National ISPS Coordinating Authority has maintained an elevated security level (ISPS MARSEC Level 2) for the area since December 2021. Based on an ongoing risk assessment and intelligence indicating persistent threats to maritime traffic, the Authority issued an updated OXXO notice on 18 December 2023, confirming MARSEC Level 2 for the Gulf of Guinea. The notice clarifies the geographical risk area and underscores the importance of Danish ships taking appropriate precautionary measures when operating in the region.

Update of the ISPS Security Level for the Gulf of Guinea

Based on available information and the continued threat of piracy in the waters off West Africa, the National ISPS Coordinating Authority issued an OXXO notice on 18 December 2023 regarding the continued maintenance of ISPS MARSEC Level 2. This notice upholds the elevated security level that was first introduced on 16 December 2021.

The MARSEC Level 2 risk area in the Gulf of Guinea (excluding port areas) is defined by the following geographical coordinates:

  1. 06°07′00”N – 001°13′00”E (Lomé, Togo)

  2. 02°47′00”N – 001°13′00”E

  3. 01°01′00”N – 005°00′00”E

  4. 01°01′00”N – 009°32′00”E (Equatorial Guinea)

The National ISPS Coordinating Authority will reassess the situation no later than 31 December 2025.
