The EU Commission launches the maritime safety package

Published 01-06-2023

Today, the EU Commission has presented the maritime safety package, which contains proposals for the revision of five legal acts related to safety and prevention of pollution.

The legal acts implement international rules in the relevant areas and include

  • the directive on port state control,
  • the directive on compliance with flag State requirements,
  • the directive on establishing the fundamental principles governing the investigations of accidents in the maritime transport sector,
  • the directive on ship-source pollution and on the introduction of penalties, including criminal penalties, for pollution offences and
  • regulation on the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

The purpose of the package is to update the legal acts so that they are in line with international requirements. These are regulatory changes primarily made under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the regional organization for port state control, Paris MoU. The directives should also reflect experiences gained from the use of new technologies.
