CSG consists of 18 countries that share the same values and principles of open and unrestricted access to international maritime markets. The group’s main task is to monitor and respond to discriminatory or restrictive shipping policy measures.
Global shipping in uncertain times
During the meeting, members discussed shipping policy in a time marked by major geopolitical changes. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order and ensuring free and equal market access. Members stressed the need for CSG to be a clear voice in advocating open and fair shipping and in countering rising tendencies towards protectionism and regionalisation.
The green transition of shipping
A central topic of discussion was the green transition of shipping. There was broad agreement to focus efforts on how to secure adoption of the Net-Zero Framework (NZF) at IMO in October. Several countries pointed out that, if adopted, the framework will require significant implementation work, with a strong need for clear and transparent rules for the industry to follow.
The future maritime workforce
Most CSG countries are facing challenges in attracting young people to the maritime sector. The meeting underlined the importance of showcasing the many career opportunities the sector offers – both at sea and ashore. It was also agreed that maritime education and training must adapt to technological developments to ensure that future seafarers are equipped with the right skills.
